Engineering Standards

  • Heights: In most states, retaining walls over 1.0m (or closer than 1.5m to a boundary) require council approval and engineering certification. See State Licensing Rules.
  • Drainage: Walls fail because of hydrostatic pressure, not soil weight. A minimum 300mm wide column of 20mm drainage gravel with a sleeved ag-pipe at the base is standard. Read Retaining Wall Drainage Standards.
  • Embedment: The first course must be buried. Usually 10% of the wall height. This calculator assumes you have included the buried course in your total height.
